His research interests include data science, fintech, digital transformation, and the pedagogical applications of AI.

Recognition from the Selection Panel

Dr. Yu currently teaches the GE Level 2 Thematic Course “GTSC2066 ChatGPT – The start of a new wave of Generative AI”. This course provides a holistic exploration of generative AI, where students gain hands on experience with tools like ChatGPT and MidJourney while critically analysing their technical applications, creative potential, and broad societal implications.

The Panel commends Dr. Yu for his masterful application of experiential and project-based learning. He effectively bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application by integrating real world AI tools and business challenges into his course. The course has been thoughtfully designed around eight thematic frameworks, guiding students through the technical, ethical, and societal implications of generative AI.

Dr. Yu’s “learn-by-play” pedagogy fosters a dynamic and effective learning environment. This has been clearly evidenced by student projects, such as the development of an AI-powered study chatbot for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (DSE) Chinese paper and a project addressing AI inaccuracy issues for a commercial travel business. These learning outcomes demonstrate his ability to inspire students to create tangible, impactful solutions.

Dr. Yu’s commitment to pedagogical innovation have been further demonstrated by his success in securing a HK$140,000 Teaching Development Grant. This funding will support his work in experiential learning with self-driving robots, promising further advancements in his teaching.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication and innovative pedagogies in GE teaching, the Panel recommended Dr. Yu for the GE Teaching Award (Individual) to honour his excellent performance.
