Let’s walk on the historical streets in Sham Shui Po, a vibrant district in Hong Kong! We will listen to the stories told by the residents, old shops and buildings!

Get to know how the lives of the locals and the immigrants are transformed by housing policies and industrial restructuring, through:

 

 
Route of the walking tour:
  • North Kowloon Magistracy:
    Introduce the role of Sham Shui Po in the HK immigration history and future
  • Mei Ho House:
    Recount the environment of squatters in the 1950s and the first generation of government subsidized housing
  • Junction of Pak Tin Street and Woh Chai Street:
    Retrace the evolution of housing policy by looking at the public houses in Shek Kip Mei which were built in different generations
  • JCCAC:
    Witness how an industrial building transformed into a vibrant hub of arts and creativity
  • Junction of Pei Ho street and Tai Po Road:
    Learn about the contemporary housing situation in HK characterized by cramped living spaces
  • Kung Wo Soy Bean Factory:
    Listen to the stories of decades-old shops
  • Apliu Street market:
    Feel the energy of the street market whose products range from second hand goods to latest technology gadgets
  • Shia Wong Hip snake soup restaurant:
    Learn about Chinese medicinal diet and take pictures with the shop’s pet snake
*** Note: There will be a 1-hour lunch break. Participants can have lunch at your own cost in nearby restaurants. Also during the walk in the afternoon, you may enjoy a bowl of bean-curd dessert or snake soup at your own cost.

This activity will be conducted  in English and Cantonese  and is a  CCL-recognized event .

Fee Full Sponsorship (Deposit: HKD$50)
Eligibility Full-time UGC-funded undergraduates of HKBU
Registration Method On or before 16 Mar 2017 (Thurs), bring along your student ID card and pay $50 deposit in cash at the GE Office (AAB805, 10am to 12:30pm, 2pm to 5:30pm). The deposit will be refunded to students who attend the activity on time. Limited quotas. First come, first served!
