Character Strengths in Chinese Culture:
Confucian Virtues and Service Leadership

In recent decades, developing character strengths has received increasing attention by researchers in the field of service leadership education. While a growing body of research has demonstrated the importance of character strengths in effective leadership, the theoretical foundation is mostly based on Western literature. There is lack of indigenous theoretical framework for understanding moral characters in Chinese people, a population that accounts for one fifth of the world population. Confucian virtues are regarded as developmental ideals and important character traits in the Chinese culture, despite industrialization and urbanization in different Chinese communities. It is argued that Confucian virtues may provide an indigenous conceptual framework to understand character strengths in the Chinese culture.

In this presentation, several key Confucian virtues found closely related to Service Leadership will be introduced. The design of a lecture that incorporates these Chinese character strengths into Service Leadership Education for university student will be demonstrated.
