What is Double-counting?

  1. All students are required to take a 3-unit Interdisciplinary GE Capstone Course or an Interdisciplinary Independent Study (GE Capstone) under the new GE Programme.
  2. Programmes can decide to double-count specific 3-unit GE Capstone towards the major, minor or concentration requirements of the programmes.
  3. If a student decide to double-count a GE Capstone, he/she has to take other course(s) as replacement to make up the 3 units to fulfil the graduation requirement.
  4. Programmes can assign the type of courses or specific course(s) as replacement courses; if no replacement courses are specified, students can take any courses as replacement.

Things to Note:

  1. GE Capstone CANNOT be counted as free electives.
  2. In fulfilling the overall units required for graduation, the units of the double-counted courses can only be counted ONCE.
  3. The double-counting policy is not applicable to students studying under the old GE curriculum.
  4. Double-counting of GE Capstone is only applicable to students of bulletin year 2018/19 or after.

How to Double-count?

  • Register for the GE Capstone
  • Take a replacement course on the approved list* to make up the outstanding 3 units

*If no replacement courses are assigned by programmes, students can take any course as replacement.

  • Apply to AR for double-counting
    • Submit your application via the BUniPort (Studies > My e-Application > Registration & Study Progression > Apply for Double-counting GE Capstone towards Major Requirements).

Remarks:

Students will be able to apply for double counting in their final year. AR will inform students of the details via email in January & March.

FAQs

For students admitted under the old GE curriculum (Bulletin year 2017/18 or before):
1
Can I take a GE Capstone course to fulfill the GE Distribution Requirements?

Yes. But please note that Interdisciplinary Independent Study (IIS) cannot fulfill the GE distribution requirements. Please refer to our course list page to reconfirm/ check whether it is a course or Interdisciplinary Independent Study (IIS).

2
Can I double-count a GCAP course towards my major/minor/concentration requirements?

NO. There is no “GE Capstone” requirement in the old GE curriculum and hence students cannot double-count a GCAP course.

For students admitted under the new GE curriculum (Bulletin year 2018/19 or after):
1
Can I take a major/ minor/ concentration course and double-count it towards the GE Capstone requirement?

NO. You can only take a GCAP course and double-count it towards your major/minor/concentration requirements, but not vice versa.

2
Can I take a GCAP course and double-count it towards my free electives?

NO. GCAP courses cannot be used to fulfill the free elective requirements.

3
If I take two GCAP courses, can the first one fulfil the GE Capstone requirement, and the second one fulfil my major/minor/ concentration requirement?

NO. The second GCAP course is not regarded as a GE Capstone so it cannot be double-counted towards any major, minor or concentration requirement. The second GCAP course can only be taken to fulfill ONE major/minor/concentration requirement if the programme allows it. Students can contact the programme offices for information.

4
If I double-count a GCAP course towards my major/minor/concentration requirements, does it mean that I have fulfilled 3 units of GE Capstone and 3 units of my major/minor/concentration requirements?

NO. You have to take other course(s) as replacement to make up the 3 units to fulfil the graduation requirement.

5
Can I choose any courses to make up the outstanding 3 units (replacement courses) after double-counting?

YES – If your major/minor/concentration programme does not specified any replacement course(s), you can take any courses to make up the outstanding 3 units.

NO – If your major/minor/concentration programme assigns the type of courses or specific course(s) as replacement courses, you must take those courses to make up the outstanding 3 units.

6
Will double-counting affect GPA calculation or the total number of units earned?

NO. Any GCAP course remains a 3-unit course in GPA calculation and only 3 units will be earned. Students still need to take a total of 128 units for graduation. The course that is double-counted towards will not appear on the transcript.

7
Will the double-counting be done automatically?

NO. You have to apply to AR (information will be provided soon) after you complete and pass an eligible GCAP course. You have to declare which major/minor/concentration requirements you want the GCAP to be double-counted towards.

If you choose not to double-count a GCAP course you have taken, no application is needed.
