Reading Picture Books with the Community
This is a Service-learning course.
This course aims to
- cultivate students’ social awareness, empathy and responsibility by supporting them to run picture book reading projects in Chinese/English for the underprivileged and minority communities in Hong Kong, e.g. Filipino, Indonesian, Nepali, Pakistani and Thai;
- enhance students’ generic competencies for creativity, communication and innovative problem solving skills through collaborating with local schools and non-government organizations to design and deliver activities or materials in Chinese/English with a special concern for the needs and challenges faced by the underprivileged and minority groups;
- educate students about the challenges and obstacles in second language acquisition faced by learners of different ages and backgrounds with a focus on the underprivileged and minority groups of ethnic origin in Hong Kong;
- encourage students to explore the relationship between writing and graphical illustration, and particularly the linguistic and aesthetical use of images and text;
- introduce reading materials and employ digital technology to develop learning activities/materials, and/or creating an online platform to share these materials to maximize the impact.
