Data Storytelling for Gender Equality
This is a Service-learning course.
The aim of this course is to promote better use of gender data to inform policy making, enhance accountability and track progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all United Nations member states. More specifically, the course covers topics such as data visualization techniques, media messaging, statistical literacy, advocating with gender data and building effective communication strategies with data.
This is an interdisciplinary course that involves gender studies, policy studies and communication. It aims to provide students with the relevant knowledge, skills and values that follow them to contribute to the advocacy and progress of gender equality for organizations, institutions and the society. The course has no pre-requisite and is open to any major. After completing this course, students should be able to
- understand the impact of gender statistics in policy development;
- integrate a gender perspective in collection, analysis and presentation of data;
- translate analytical results
