Art and the Community
This is an Experiential Learning Course.
This is a GE capstone course in which students address specific community problems, social issues and global discourse informed by knowledge and practice in community art, socially engaged art, inclusive design and other visual arts practice. Through a cycle of discovery, action and reflexivity, students seek to achieve the needs for the community and the public while develop deeper understanding and skills for themselves through experiential learning, such as identifying social problems through fieldwork, working with the community, seeking for social change through artistic and design practices, and through that to strengthen their interpersonal skills, leadership and citizenship. Engaging with professionals from diverse disciplines during the courses’ lectures, workshops/fieldworks will expose students to various data utilization methods, enhancing their analytical skills and broadening their perspectives on possible policy development. The course requires students to engage in a community project in which through visual arts practice to create better awareness of a particular social issue and examine how to engage the public in that social issue through visual arts.
