A Tale of Two Cities

This is an Experiential Learning Course.

This course provides a comparative analysis of Hong Kong, China and Singapore with regards to the development of healthcare system, housing, public transportation and education. In addition to their British colonial legacies, both Hong Kong, China and Singapore have experienced similar developmental trajectories: both competed as financial and commercial centres and served as hubs for multinational corporations. Students will learn the historical development of Hong Kong, China and Singapore.

This course is designed to foster transdisciplinary discussion among sociology, politics and public administration in terms of theory and practice. Students will address how the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China and Singaporean governments deal with matters concerning healthcare, housing, public transportation and education empirically, comparatively and interpretively. Along with collecting editorials from various newspapers and performing social media data analysis, students are also required to complete simulation assignments where they act as decision-makers for various scenarios they may face in real-life situations.

This course will equip students with critical thinking skills, decision-making capabilities in their own lives and leadership capabilities.
