Introduction to the Study of World Music

This course introduces students to the diversity of music and culture across the world by combining the disciplines of musicology, anthropology, history, and cultural studies. Cultural understanding is the centerpiece in this music appreciation course, which systematically explore performance traditions from around the world using an area studies perspective week by week. Selected musical examples will be drawn from (1) sub-Saharan Africa, (2) North Africa and the Middle East, (3) South Asia, (4) North Asia, (5) East Asia, (6) Southeast Asia, (7) Oceania, (8) South America, (9) the Caribbean, (10) North America, and (11) Europe. The geographic focus provides cultural and historical themes including the relationships between music and identity, economy, technology, and conflicts between tradition and modernity.
