GCHC1057 Chinese Popular Music: Its Cultural and Musical Meanings

The professor is very engaging. She always asks different students questions and encourages us to express our opinions… She uses that video to test us on musical knowledge and to relate it to musical history. It gives me more incentives to write what I feel about the performance.

The part I love the most is Cantonese slang songs, such as “扮靚仔” and some songs by Sam Hui. The course instructor plays a video of Sam Hui which talks about how musical creativity flowed with history and how to use songs to reflect what happened at that time in Hong Kong.

課程最有趣的地方莫過於大家能在課上一起聽歌,所以即使是連續三個小時的課堂,輕輕鬆鬆拍拍手就過了……我在此課程中接觸到許多不同類型的流行音樂,主要為中港台三地,舊的新的、流行的或少眾的都有,同學或可藉此找到自己喜歡的音樂,同時又能學會欣賞其他音樂,非常有意思。

……老師花了很多時間預備課堂內容,詳細並深入的介紹流行歌曲……同學不用怕課堂沉悶……對流行歌有興趣的同學,很應該修讀這科目……功課量看起來挺多,但這科不用考試 😉 重要的是,完成了以上的功課,學到的知識比考試得著還要多……

This course trains our listening skills through listening to different Chinese popular music, and fosters our critical thinking by examining the meanings of popular music and their relation with different issues, like gender, identity, politics and so on. To learn with this interesting way, we will have a clear concept of Chinese culture and willing to memorize it.
