Over a billion of people are earning less than US$1.25 a day around the world.
Facing constant poverty, how are they struggling to survive?
If you were one of them, could you survive?

This simulation game allows you to step into the shoes of those in poverty. Participants, broken into family units, must eke out an existence by earning enough to pay for rent, food, education, medical needs, etc. Can you get your family out of the poverty web?
“Struggle for Survival” will consolidate your awareness and knowledge of poverty related issues. You’ll learn more about the lives of the poor population, as well as your rights and responsibilities as a global citizen.

  • “Struggle for Survival” Simulation Game
    This simulation game allows participants to step into the shoes of those in poverty. Participants, broken into family units, must eke out an existence by making paper bags out of newspaper and home-made glue. Each family must earn enough to pay for rent, food, sanitation, medical needs and, if they are fortunate, education for one of their family members. Those that cannot make it end up in the hands of a loan shark. This simulation throws participants into the challenges and intricacy of the poverty web.

This activity will be conducted  in English  and is a  CCL-recognized event .

Fee Full Sponsorship (Deposit: HKD$100)
Eligibility Full-time UGC-funded undergraduates of HKBU
Registration Method By 13 Apr 2016 (Wed), bring along your student ID card and pay $100 deposit in cash at the GE Office (AAB805, 10am to 12:30pm, 2pm to 5:30pm). The deposit will be refunded to students who attend the activity and submit reflective journals on time. Limited quotas. First come, first served!
Registration Deadline 5:30pm on 13 Apr 2016 (Wed)

Reflective Journal Details:
Content Upload 1 photo taken at the event and write a caption of at least 30 words to describe your thoughts/feelings from the event.
Submission Deadline 10am on 25 Apr 2016 (Mon)
Submission Method

Step 1: On your Facebook “Status”, Upload a photo taken at the event and write a caption of at least 30 words to describe your thoughts/feelings from the activity. Set the privacy for Public view. At the end of the status, add the following sentence:

Step 2: Visit “General Education at HKBU” Facebook Page and click “Message” (top right corner). State your contact information and the posting time of your Reflective Journal as follows:

「適者生存」將鞏固你對全球貧窮議題的認識,讓你進一步了解世界各地貧窮線下人民的生活情況,以及自己身為世界公民的權利和責任。

  • 「適者生存」(“Struggle for Survival”) 模擬活動
    官方描述︰This simulation allows participants to step into the shoes of those in poverty. Participants, broken into family units, must eke out an existence by making paper bags out of newspaper and home-made glue. Each family must earn enough to pay for rent, food, sanitation, medical needs and, if they are fortunate, education for one of their family members. 活動將 以英語進行 ,並為 CCL聯通課程認可活動 

費用 全數贊助(按金:港幣100元)
報名資格 獲大學教育資助委員會資助的全日制學士學位學生均可參加
報名方法 請於2016年4月13日(三)或之前(上午10時至下午12時30分,下午2時30分至5時30分)帶同學生證到通識教育處 (AAB805室)報名,並繳付現金港幣100元作為按金。依時出席活動依時遞交「個人感想」的同學,可取回按金。名額有限,先到先得。
