GCNU1017 Mathematics of Fairness

課程設計看得出經過精心計算,先由社會上有實際應用投票系統、選區代表分配制度及其弊病制度作切入,再逐漸引申到一些可用作量度公平的準則,及何謂一個公平的投票系統及每個系統的弊處,讓同學由淺入深地了解課程所指的「公平數學」。 

導師在教新課題時多會用實際例子作導入,使課程不會流於理論;而導師亦時會和學生討論究竟投票某種方法是否合乎情理,又會探討其他改變該方法的可行方案,令我這個對數學不太有興趣的學生也能投入這個課程!

(Translation) I can see that the teacher spent a lot of time on designing the course. It starts with the polling system in our society, and the pros and cons of the election system. Then the teacher elaborated on the criteria of fairness, the definition of fair polling system and drawbacks of each system. From easy to advanced level, we gradually learnt what mathematics fairness is all about.
When the teacher introduced new topics, he used lots of real examples from daily life, not just theory. From time to time, the teacher discussed with us whether certain system is fair and led us to evaluate the ways to improve it. I enjoyed the lessons very much even though I was not very keen on maths.
