Exemptions & Transfer of GE Units

1. Year 1 Student

Year 1 students

  1. For those admitted with non-HKDSE qualifications in AY2016/17 or AY2017/18, you may apply for transfer of up to 12 units in GE if you:
    • have completed relevant courses in local sub-degree institutions previously with satisfactory grades (usually grade C- or above); and/or
    • have achieved the corresponding qualifications for University Chinese (GCLA1005) and University English I (GCLA1008).
  2. Under special circumstances, you may apply for exemption from taking GCLA1005 University Chinese if you:
    • have learned Chinese Language for less than six years while receiving primary and secondary education; or
    • have learned Chinese Language for six years or more in schools, but have been taught an adapted and simpler Chinese Language curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in our local schools; or
    • are non-Chinese speaking, i.e. students who are:
      1. admitted to HKBU with the substitution of the HKDSE Chinese Language requirement by other Language Subjects; or
      2. non-local, non-Mainland and admitted as undergraduate degree-seeking students.

    Depending on your background, you will be required to take GCLA1015 Chinese I or GCLA1016 University Chinese (Syllabus B) as replacement. All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For detailed instructions, please click here.

2. Returning Exchange Student

Returning Exchange Students

You may apply for transfer of GE units if you have completed relevant courses aboard with comparable number of units* and satisfactory grades (usually grade C- or above). All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For detailed instructions on making an application, please click here.

If you wish to find out in advance whether courses you enroll for in the exchange programme may be transferred to HKBU to fulfill GE requirements, you are welcomed to consult the GEO by sending the respective course information, including course descriptions and number of contact hours, to ge@hkbu.edu.hk.

*For instance, if you wish to satisfy the 3-unit GE Distribution Arts requirement (GDAR), you have to complete a course or courses related to Arts and Humanities with around 39 contact hours (including lectures, tutorials, laboratories and field studies) in total.

3. Non-JUPAS Applicant for Year 3 Entry

Non-JUPAS Applicants for Year 3 Entry (effective from the 2015 intake)

  1. For Associate Degree graduates from the College of International Education, who are admitted in 2012 or after, a block transfer of 38 units will be granted at the point of admission. You will also be granted partial exemptions in the non-credit bearing University Life Requirements.
  2. All other Associate Degree graduates will be granted partial exemptions in the non-credit bearing University Life Requirements, and a block transfer of 27 units for the GE requirements (shaded in orange as shown in the table below) at the point of admission:

    If you have taken any relevant courses in categories excluded from the block transfer, additional unit transfer or exemption may be requested after you have officially registered as a HKBU student. All applications will be considered on case-by-case basis.

  3. All Higher Diploma graduates will be granted partial exemptions in the non-credit bearing University Life Requirements, and a block transfer of 18 units for the GE requirements (shaded in green as shown in the table below) at the point of admission:

Exemptions and Completion dates of U-Life

University Life (U-Life) is a non-credit bearing requirement listed under the GE Programme. For details of each of the U-Life requirements, please click here.

Students directly admitted to Year 2 or 3 at HKBU will have to complete the requirements by the deadlines given below. Exemptions will also be automatically granted for some students as follows:
