What is the course about?

Drawing on the perspectives in sociology, GDSS1085 examines the changing meanings of love and intimacy and their importance in shaping the identities of individuals. It will start with a cross-cultural investigation of the notions of love and intimacy, followed by discussions of the transformation of intimacy in (late-)modern society. Emphasis will be laid on the significant changes in the sphere of intimacies particularly in relation to the commodification of love, sex and body modification, the advent of the internet, and the rise of the sexual revolution and the sexual rights movement.
