What is the course about?

GDSS1027 aims to provide students with background knowledge on the relationship between individuals and the groups to which they belong so that they gain a better understanding of how people interact with and think about others. Through this course, students look closely at social behaviours in everyday life in order to uncover some of the taken for granted assumptions and knowledge people share (or do not share) with other members of the society. Students are required to study a range of social topics/issues to examine the impact of social factors and situational variables that influence human development and social interactions/behaviours. Not only do students read about and discuss these social topics/issues but they also make observations about social behaviours in everyday life and reflect on their own participation in social interaction.
