What is the course about?

Self-Expression Chinese calligraphy is a unique form of art that integrates artistic elements in the visual forms of Chinese characters and their literary content. This studio-based course introduces the ways of appreciating this special art form, through practical studies in basic brush techniques and styles of Chinese calligraphy with an emphasis on standard script (kaishu 楷書) and semi-cursive script (xingshu 行書). Meanwhile, the relationship between calligraphy and the notion of self-expression will be examined through observations and analysis of examples of calligraphic works by major calligraphers. Students will be guided to develop their own calligraphic skills and creative strategies of expressing their own personal ideas through making calligraphic works, allowing them to practise calligraphy as self-cultivation and part of a healthy lifestyle.
