What is the course about?

GDAR1077 aims to introduce the major figures and schools in classical and modern Chinese philosophy. Major theses and issues in Confucianism, Daoist philosophy and Buddhist philosophy will be explained and discussed. The major concerns of Chinese philosophy in areas like metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics will be addressed, and the proposed solutions and theses to deal with those concerns will be presented and discussed. The development of modern Chinese philosophy will be surveyed. The relevance of Chinese philosophy to modern life will also be emphasized. Students will be encouraged to think critically, and to establish their own interpretations and conclusions rationally.
