What is the course about?

GCVM1025 examines two major practices at the heart of the Christian faith – giving and forgiving, together with the underlying Christian concepts of grace and human person. It explores critically the implications of Christian giving and forgiving for contemporary cultures, life settings where increasingly self-serving and unforgiving attitudes are challenging virtuous generosity and transformative reconciliation. Students will be introduced to the Christian concepts of creation and providence as these relate to human dignity, righteousness and justification, human sinfulness and grace leading to reconciliation. All of these factors ultimately relate to a Christian understanding of the Trinitarian God as the original and continuing Giver and ultimate sacrificial Forgiver. During this course these concepts will be critically evaluated in the light of multidisciplinary concerns related to giving / philanthropy / and charity and forgiveness / justice / reconciliation. In our contemporary world that is market-driven and war-torn, this course will seek to help students appreciate Christian faith as a way of life echoing the Trinitarian God’s generous giving and life-transforming forgiveness.
